Abstract: All semiconductor fabs are required to have two distinct life safety systems (LSS) and an onsite training emergency response team (ERT). The 1st LSS is the toxic gas monitoring system commonly known as the TGMS which monitors the gas detection systems used to protect personnel and shutdown the various gas/chemical systems upon detection of a chemical (vapor) leak. The 2nd LSS is the fire alarm system which is primarily code specific to monitor all the fire detection and fire suppression systems for the facility.
Most new semiconductor fabs have a 3rd LSS, which is a high sensitivity smoke detection (HSSD) system commonly reporting to the Fire LSS. The goal and purpose of any ERT is to respond to any emergency situation and mitigate it before it harms personnel and/or manufacturing. In today’s fabs, the ERT first responders are notified by all these systems independently, which is cumbersome, expensive, difficult to maintain, limited in data, and commonly inconsistent. As technology continues to develop, KFPI will discuss a future possibility where 1 LSS could exists for all early warning fire and gas detection systems providing all information consistently to ERT fire responders.
